Photo Print Size & Framing Guide

Find a photograph you like. Then choose how much room to give it. This guide helps you compare DATU print sizes, decide between framed and unframed, and understand what a mat changes.

How to choose a photo print size

Artist Series 00 has five listed print sizes: 8 × 12, 12 × 18, 16 × 24, 20 × 30 and 24 × 36 inches. Start with the space where the photograph will go, not just the size that looks good on your phone.

Measure the available wall area. Try marking a paper outline of two possible sizes, then step back to your usual viewing spot. Leave space for the frame, any mat and the other things on the wall.

Print size A starting point
8 × 12 inches A small wall area or one piece in a group.
12 × 18 inches A smaller standalone print or a pair of photographs.
16 × 24 inches A middle option to test when you want the photograph to stand on its own.
20 × 30 inches A larger feature print with more room around it.
24 × 36 inches The largest listed option in this series, worth measuring carefully before ordering.

These are suggestions, not rules about what fits your room. All five sizes have 2:3 proportions. An 8 × 10 frame is not a direct fit for an 8 × 12 print. Check the photograph's orientation and the dimensions of your chosen option.

Framed or unframed?

Choose unframed when you want to arrange the framing yourself. Choose a framed option when you want to order the print and its frame together. Available frame choices and the exact price are shown on each product page.

Already own a frame? Check both its stated print size and any mat opening before ordering. Matching one dimension is not enough.

Two framed prints to compare

For a still life, explore 00_19, a drink can photo print. Its Gold Premium Metal frame is available with a mat in 12 × 18, 16 × 24, 20 × 30 and 24 × 36 inch print sizes.

For color and architectural detail, explore 00_22, a window and mural photo print. Its Black Premium Oak frame is available with a mat in all five listed print sizes, from 8 × 12 to 24 × 36 inches.

Choose your size, frame and mat on the product page to see the exact price. The listed print size is not the outside frame measurement.

What does a mat do?

A mat adds a border between the photograph and the frame. It changes the amount of visual space around the image, so compare both looks rather than assuming one is always better.

A listed print size is not a promise of the finished outside frame measurements. Frame and mat choices can change the overall dimensions. When a piece needs to fit a particular spot or an existing frame, ask us to confirm the measurements before ordering. Not every size, frame and mat combination is necessarily available.

Choosing photography for your room

Start with a photograph you want to see every day. For a mostly neutral palette, compare our black and white photography prints. For water, palms and beach scenes, explore the coastal photography prints.

If you are choosing a pair, look for something the photographs share: a color, a subject or an amount of open space. Measure their combined width, including frames and the gap between them. Each print is sold separately.

Find a starting point in Artist Series 00

For water and an open sky, explore 00_02, a wooden pier on still water, or 00_07, a pier beneath a golden sky. For black and white photography, look at 00_05, a person crossing a city street, and 00_15, wildflowers in mist. For a different kind of detail, try 00_18, a vintage vehicle dashboard.

These are photographs by Nick Patterson from DATU's first collection. The numbers stay the same whichever available size or frame you choose.

A print and a digital edition are different products

An unframed print is a physical item for your wall. A Digital Edition is a photo file for personal screens, with no physical print or frame included. For download help and permitted use, see the Digital Editions Guide.
